Gunna Break My Face On The Sweet Sunshine

OBCT’s cover of Beck’s “Sweet Sunshine” from Mellow Gold

DOWNLOAD: “Sweet Sunshine” OBCT COVER!

Vocals: Makousky/Bateman/Emrys/Erickson/Nelsen, Drums: Johnson, Bass: Makousky, Guitars: Erickson/Makousky, Samples: Bateman, Keyboards: Emrys, Horns: Nelsen

I was around 16 when I first heard Beck’s Mellow Gold, I loved the way he melded the mentality of the folk singer with the death rocker vibe all with a comedic feel and more than a few production tricks up his sleeve.  At the time I had heard nothing like it even close to the mainstream and I found it quite inspirational.  One of my favorite songs on the record was the final track on side A of the cassette tape called “Sweet Sunshine”. It had a funky little beat but the rest of it was drenched in distortion, almost unrecognizable elements swirled together up to the ‘slinky solo’ and I was flat out blown away…  Fast forward a decade to the OBCT studios and we find the boys pounding out their own, more defined, version of the song in their signature style.  All the songs that I would crank on my walkman all those years ago are now being translated into covers for The Obese, and the world keeps going full circle on your ass!

Davey Jones, R.I.P. me boy…

Back when I was a seven or eight year old kid one of my old tapes I owned was a Monkees record I bough at a neighborhood garage sale.  On whole it was a fun little record that I would listen to to go to sleep some nights.  One of the songs didn’t fit in with the rest to my young ears, on the B side of the tape there was a song called “Daydream Believer” it had this little voice over intro which gave you an inside look into the recording process and it really resonated with me, just that little clip of him talking at the beginning was something i thought was so cool..  The song was saccharin sweet, catchy and plotting, I always hoped one day to be in a band and try and do that song… Fast forward like 20 years and I was drumming and producing for Uber Cool Kung Fu, one day on a whim I produced the drums and guitars and sent it over to Jesse Shaw and from then on the whole band was hooked into playing this sappy lil ballad, they weren;t thrilled but I always enjoyed it.  Here’s a free mp3 for you to download to honor Davey who passed just this week.

Eldergaad :: OBCT :: Albuterol :: Kether

Station-4, Downtown St. Paul

8pm :: 21+ :: $5.00 at the door

A free copy of Twin Cities Electropunk Vol. 6 at the door!

On Saturday January 21st the stage at Station-4 will be transformed into a battleground, for the agents of metal are defending their turf against the pluck and tenacity of electropunk.  Less of a battle for blood and ground and more a battle to broaden the musical horizons of those who partake. The night boasts the best of both worlds; bridging the worlds of epic metal and electropunk-industrial.  The electropunk community has long been a bastion for ‘what-ever-the-fuck and rock and roll’ combining elements from all over the musical spectrum into a slurry of electronic elements beaten bloody by tenacious music producers who could give a good god damn about what genre they’re classified under.  The Twin Cities has a long held tradition of metal, both classic and nu with plenty of room to wander between the two. No band has kept their craft quite as pure as Eldergaad, who’s uncompromising vision of metal oozes from every pore on their rune-painted faces.  Their timeless approach to music of thrash, stands directly poised as counterpoint to the ‘fast and loose, ‘no-fucks-given’ approach of bands like OBCT, Kether and Albuterol.  This night aims to bring together those of all persuasions into the clutches of one unified creation, heavy enough to flay the skin from your bones and nuanced enough to have you question your very concept of what music is supposed to be.  The first 50 paid at the door get a free cd copy of Twin Cities Electopunk Vol.6.

OBCT offers a performance and presence that nearly overloads the stage and challenges their listeners with layers of sound and concept meanly explicitly for those with a deftly contrasted  aesthetic.

KETHER:
Website: www.ketherband.com

The music of Kether is a synthesis of Electronic, Industrial, Metal and Punk styles. Its members having long and varied histories playing, mixing, producing and recording throughout the Twin Cities and beyond. What emerges from this is a musical cyborg – human in its emotional complexity and an industrial machine in its execution.

OBCT begins production on redonkulously huge undertaking!

OBCT begins production on their 8th Studio Album

With the “Survived By” sessions all but over with, OBCT is looking towards their next studio record. It will be a huge project with the work title of “Bricks” which aims to be a 250+ choose your own adventure style RPG Industrial record where the listener will guide themselves through songs, spoken word, and radio-play making choices for themselves that will twist the content to suit each ‘player/listener’.

The group has ballooned up to 7 active members, counting new additions Nic Heidt as producer and Reverend Revolution (Dan Nelsen) on vocals, lyrics and horns.  With this bolstered roster and more creative powerhouses on the way the group will not be at a loss for new ideas.  Working with a wide variety of outside talent OBCT will be pushing to outer boundaries of their sound, from harkening back to the days of plunderphonics all the way to the advancement of their thrashing cutting electronic metal style.

An example of the manic, off the cuff, electronic punk rock is the newest to escape the confines of Pophorse Studios, a demo called “Maximum Upvotes” which you can download below.

Maximum Upvotes DEMO

What in the HELL have you been doing?!?!?

Yeah, things haven’t exactly been frantic in the studio as of late.  Sessions keep piling up but there’s been nothing new to release for a good couple of months now.  We’ve been doing sessions for AUDIOCENTESIS which is Dave’s Erickson’s (of obct) electro ebm project. He has an EP in the final stages of production that will hopefully be out in late 2011.  We’ve had William Lorentz (of Autonomy) in to work on sessions for GRIMTASTIC our dark electro project.  Of course OBCT has been working on the final tracks for “Survived By” which hopes to be finished before the years end.  The final song on Survived By will feature Tonja (vocals) and Andre (pianos/keys) from THE BLACKLIGHT, and industrial soul project in a killer cross-over.  We’ll be posting the new works very soon, thanks for dropping by.
